Michelmores Trainees provide insight into life at the Firm in Chambers Student Guide
My, how Michelmores has grown!
Chambers Student, the students' companion to the legal profession, has recently published an insightful piece about Michelmores. Claiming to give the "truth about law Firms and the Bar", the piece tracks the firm's recent growth, the arrival of the new Managing Partner, Tim Richards, and of course, the type of work that trainees will be asked to do during their training contract.
“You'll often see instructions coming in that are much larger than you'd expect for the size of the teams we have,” said one trainee, adding that "there's a huge amount of responsibility available". Another mentioned being involved in the "higher value and international work” whilst it still feeling "like you're working in a smaller, friendlier firm.” Notable work that was highlighted includes the corporate team advising financial advisers Cantor Fitzgerald and Spark Advisory in the multimillion-pound restructuring of Trinity Exploration and Production, an oil and gas company operating in Trinidad. The Real Estate team was feted for both its public sector work with The Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (including the sale of Fulham Police Station and New Scotland Yard), and private residential development work including advising Stanhope plc on the sale of 900 apartments within the redevelopment of the former BBC Television Centre, London.
The piece highlights the opportunities available for trainees across the firm's three offices of Exeter, Bristol and London, with those interviewed agreeing that “all of the offices are very unique and each have their own personality". The strategy of focusing on three strategic sectors and winning work through the London office seems to be working, with the USP of "funnelling London-quality work down to the South West” being a real attraction to both trainees and other recruits alike.
Colette Stevens, HR Director, commented:
"Reading the article I was genuinely delighted with the trainees' responses. As a Firm
, we have a fantastic culture that allows trainees to gain great experience and exposure to complex matters and clients, whilst giving them sufficient support to help them become confident and well-rounded business professionals. We were really proud that our 2018 qualifiers all decided to continue their career at Michelmores."
