International Women's Day – interview with Sara Parker, Barratt David Wilson Homes

This International Women's Day on 8 March 2017, we spoke to some of our female clients working in the property and construction sector to find out why they love working in the industry and uncover what their roles entail day-to-day.

Tell us a bit about your job

I have worked in the property industry for 25 years, starting out as a Sales Advisor.  I really enjoy the pace and pressure of the sales environment, especially in my current position as Sales Director for Barratt Homes.  My role focuses on developing and motivating a strong sales team who are capable of not only selling our homes but also delivering the best possible experience for our customers. This starts the moment they make contact with us, right through to the day they step through the front door of their brand new home.

What does a typical week-day entail?

My working week is hugely varied which is one of the things I love about it.  One day I could be evaluating a new location with our land team and the next I could be meeting an interior designer to agree a scheme for our show homes. I try to get out from behind the desk as much as possible and always allocate time in the week to visit our developments with my team.  As a member of the board, I also participate in developing the strategy and direction for our division.

Who do you consider to be a female role-model of yours?

My grandmother is definitely a role model for me. She is a strong and confident woman with a strong work ethic. She comes from a different generation where it wasn’t always possible for a woman to have a career, but she always encouraged me to reach for the stars and ensure I didn’t put barriers in my own way.

What is one thing on your bucket list?

I would love to live abroad and learn another language and culture.

Where is the best place you have travelled to?

Majorca, I’ve been going there for almost 20 years and I love it there. I am lucky to have been to lots of countries but Majorca is still my favourite. Although I do love New York for the shopping!

What has been your proudest moment in the last five years?

The proudest moment for me was when my children got their places at university and seeing my daughter graduate last year.
