The winners of the Michelmores Property Awards 2016 are revealed

The winners of the 14th annual Michelmores Property Awards sponsored by accountancy, investment management and tax group, Smith & Williamson, have been announced, celebrating nine outstanding property and construction projects across the South West.

Engineering firm AECOM was recognised for its strong performance over the last 12-months, winning the John Laurence Award for Professional Firm of the Year. AECOM has recently been involved in a number of key projects in the South West, including Exeter Science Park and South Cloisters at The University of Exeter’s St Luke’s Campus.

South Devon University Technical College, a purpose built ’employer driven’ vocational education facility in Newton Abbot, was awarded Project of the Year with a Value Over £7million. The project was submitted by Stride Treglown and BAM Construct UK.

The Science Park Centre in Exeter, submitted by LHC Architecture + Urbanism, took home the prize for Project of the Year with a Value £2-7million. The centre, a catalyst building for Exeter Science Park, offers flexible accommodation for businesses and the advanced technical infrastructure essential for science and technology based start-ups.

Two Cornwall-based projects were also recognised, including the luxury holiday homes development Atlantic View Lodges, submitted by Grenadier Estates as well as Cornwall Council’s purpose-built office building, Chy Trevail, submitted by BAM Construct UK.

Other winning projects for 2016, include North Devon District Hospital’s new Chemotherapy Unit, awarded Project of the Year with a Value Under £2million, submitted by Morgan Sindall and The David Wilson Partnership − alongside Quadrant Quay in Plymouth, winning the prize for Residential Project of the Year 41 Units and Over, submitted by English Cities Fund.

The EDF Energy Training Centre in Cannington, Somerset, submitted by BDG Architecture + Design was named Heritage Project of the Year, whilst Churston Court Farm near Brixham, was named ‘Residential Project of the Year 40 Units and Under (but more than 6)’ and was submitted by Dart Developments Devon.

Emma Honey, Head of Real Estate at Michelmores, said:

“This year we received a record number of entries from property developers, building contractors, architects and other industry professionals across the region. The quality of the entries we received was very impressive and my congratulations go to everyone involved in this year’s winning projects.”

Mike Lea, a partner at headline sponsors Smith & Williamson, which has a dedicated property sector team, said:

“The quality of the work being produced by the South West’s property and construction businesses is world class and I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate all those that showcased their projects, as well as the winners themselves. We were delighted to support the Michelmores Property Awards for the second year, this time as headline sponsors. It was an impressive event which attracted an influential audience and the standard of entries was extremely high.”

Mr Lea continued: “We are heavily involved in the sector, with many of our South West-based clients either working in property development and construction, or running businesses which supply them, so it was great to be able to join Michelmores and others in recognising the quality of workmanship, design and ingenuity which characterises so many of the projects in our region.”

The Michelmores Property Awards celebrates excellence across the South West’s residential and commercial property sector.

The winners were announced at an Awards Dinner hosted by writer and television producer John Lloyd at Exeter’s Sandy Park Conference Centre, on 26 May 2016.
