The Real Deal: Interview with Jason Phelps

The Real Deal: Interview with Jason Phelps

Jason Phelps is Head of EU Procurement and Competition, he specialises in EU Procurement, Competition, Merger Control and State Aids law. Jason also advises on the EU Timber Regulation. He joined Michelmores five years ago and became a Partner in 2011. Charlotte Bolton takes a few minutes out of her day to ask him our questions.

Why did you choose Michelmores?

The job advert seemed to fit me; the specialisms it required seemed to be exactly what I had – so I applied!

Why did you choose to work in the South West?

I didn’t necessarily want to move to Exeter in particular, or Devon, but I saw the calibre of Michelmores and was very impressed by the Partners who interviewed me so I decided to move. I guess I also sought a better work/life balance in the South West.

Why did you choose your area of law?

I enjoyed learning languages at school, particularly French and German. I have always been interested in Europe and wanted to practice in an area of law in which my knowledge of languages might be useful and where I could develop my interests.

What has been the highlight of your career at Michelmores?

The completion of Cornwall’s superfast broadband project – or nearly being attacked by cows in the New Forest – or dressing up as Father Christmas for the Christmas Bazaar…

What advice would you give to trainees in the current climate?

Pick your specialism carefully as you really need to love the area of law you do, team members come and go but your area of law will stay with you.

If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you be (no restraints!)?

(Without hesitation) Politician.

If you were a biscuit, what would you be and why?

Custard Cream – say no more.
