How networking helps you grow as a Solicitor Apprentice

Why does networking matter for apprentices?

We hear the term “networking” mentioned frequently when we enter the legal profession, often in the context of building professional connections, opening up opportunities, and winning or referring work. However, for solicitor apprentices, networking plays an important role in bridging the gap between learning the law in our studies and becoming a confident, practical legal professional in the workplace.

Applying legal principles in practice

As a solicitor apprentice, much of our learning happens on the job. Networking allows you to build your legal knowledge further by understanding how others are applying legal principles in practice. Conversations with other apprentices, graduates, associates, and partners can provide a valuable insight into different practice areas and working styles which will help put our studies into real-world context and eventually help us decide the area that we want to qualify into.

Sharing experiences

Networking with other apprentices and those in the early stages of their career can be especially valuable. Sharing challenges, workplace and exam experiences, and tips and tricks for managing workload helps to normalise the ups and downs of the apprenticeship route. It reminds you that progression isn’t linear, and that others are navigating similar pressures in similar circumstances and this is particularly beneficial for those who don’t have many fellow apprentices in their firm or cohort. It helps you realise you aren’t going through this alone.

Building confidence and skills

Having the opportunity to attend events, ask questions, and introduce yourself to new people can naturally build confidence over time. These interactions strengthen key skills that are central to legal practice, such as communication, active listening, relationship building and professional judgement. Attending networking events provides you with the environment to practice developing these skills that you will require in your day-today role, ensuring you feel confident with these skills upon qualifying and attending Business Development events. Through networking, you can become more visible and be seen as an apprentice that is engaged, curious and committed to your professional development.

Finding your direction

Speaking to people at different stages of their careers can help you to understand the breadth of the legal profession and which path you might be interested in exploring. It provides reassurance that there is no single “right” path and that careers evolve in all different ways over time. This perspective is particularly helpful for apprentices, who are taking a less traditional route into law and so lack confidence in what the future may look like. Over time, the connections you make through networking can become mentors, collaborators, and peers who will support your professional growth during and beyond qualification.

How is Michelmores bringing apprentices together?

Michelmores will be hosting regular legal apprentice networking events that are open to all legal apprentices at all stages of their apprenticeship. The events are designed to create an inclusive space to share your own experiences, build professional connections and learn from others, helping each other develop personally and professionally. Our next event will be coming in October, so keep your eyes peeled for updates with more details to follow.
