Why should you attend open days?

It’s getting to that time of the year again. No, not waiting for the jolly man in the red suit but the Michelmores vacation scheme and training contract applications are open!

I thought it would be helpful if I use this blog to set out what can be expected at an open day and to outline the key dates.

Michelmores’ Open Day takes place on 8 February 2017 and is held at the Firm’s head office in Exeter. It is a great way for applicants to get a brief introduction to our Firm and garner an insight into what the people and culture of our Firm are like.

Whilst it is only a snapshot, I found that the assessment day I attended had some similar characteristics to an open day. These were a true reflection of the collegiate working environment in the Firm, the willingness of people to not only help you but to talk and get to know you, and the open-arms welcome you receive as soon as you walk through the door. An open day is also an ideal way for first year students to decide what type of Firm they want to train at.

The Michelmores Open Day starts in the afternoon with a welcome from the Managing Partner, Malcolm Dickinson. This is followed by a talk with the Training Principal, Sacha Pickering, and the current trainees and NQs to get a feel for what the life of a trainee at Michelmores is like. There is an introduction to three of our legal teams, their clients and the type of work they undertake. This is followed by an office tour with the current trainees, which is a great opportunity to gather some further information on what it is like to be a trainee. It’s also a good chance to ask those questions you were too worried to ask in front of the solicitors and partners!

This is followed by the application process which is an interactive workshop with our Graduate Recruitment Team. The day ends with a well-deserved glass of wine at networking drinks with some of the solicitors, partners and trainees.

It is a busy afternoon that enables you to take away so much at the end of it. It will also help you to reflect upon your open day in your application for the vacation scheme or training contract.

The 2017 summer vacation scheme deadline is 28 February 2017. The 2017 training contract application deadline is 31 January 2017 and the 2019 training contract application deadline is 31 July 2017.

Good luck and I look forward to seeing you at the Open Day!
