Trainee Solicitors at Michelmores complete the SQE before starting their training contract, whilst Graduate Solicitor Apprentices at Michelmores complete the SQE alongside their training throughout the course of their apprenticeship. In this article, I reflect on my experience of undertaking the SQE before my training and outline my top tips to ace SQE1.

What is the SQE?

The SQE is the new route to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales. Introduced to create a standardised exam, the SQE will eventually replace the Legal Practice Course (LPC).

The SQE is split into two components:

  • SQE1 assesses a candidate’s Functioning Legal Knowledge (FLK) through 2 exams (FLK 1 and FLK 2), each consisting of 180 single best answer, multiple choice questions. Candidates must pass SQE1 in order to progress to SQE2.
  • SQE2 assesses a candidate’s practical skills across 16 scenario-based assessments.

Tip 1 – Practice makes perfect

The concept of a single best answer question (SBAQ) may seem a little unusual at first. Your task is to assess which option is the most accurate based on the fact pattern (known as the stem) and the specific question being asked (known as the lead in). I recommend practicing as many questions as you can to establish your strategy for tackling SBAQ’s. In my view, the best approach is to start by eliminating those options which are clearly wrong. Then, go with your gut.

SQE1 is a strenuous exam as each FLK session lasts over five hours. It is important that you complete several full mock exams in the immediate run up to the exam in order to build your exam stamina.

The SRA have published a number of sample questions here.

Tip 2 – Master your timing

The SQE has strict time limits (in SQE1, the screen closes at the end of your allocated time) and therefore managing your time is essential. At the start of the exam, make a note of when you expect to a reach a particular milestone so that you can keep track of your progress. Also, set yourself a limit for how long you can spend on each question. It is important that you don’t waste time agonising over difficult questions as each question is weighted equally. If you can’t answer a question within your time limit, use the flag function to highlight the question and return to it at the end.

Tip 3 – Organisation is key

The SQE’s FLK is comprised of 14 practice areas. If you have completed an undergraduate law degree or conversion course, you will be familiar with the black letter law subjects (contract, tort, etc). However, some of the procedural subjects (such as dispute resolution) may be unfamiliar to you. There is a substantial amount of content to learn which shouldn’t be underestimated. I recommend planning your revision so that you give yourself enough time to cover each subject in detail and revisit challenging topics close to the exam. Be warned, you cannot cram for the SQE!

Tip 4 – Pace yourself

The SQE is a challenging exam and preparation for it can easily become all consuming. Make sure that you schedule in time for exercise and socialising with friends. Remember – rest breaks are an essential component of effective revision!

Concluding thoughts

The SQE is a challenging exam and, with the stakes so high, it is perfectly normal to feel apprehensive. However, with effective preparation, you will be able to confidently tackle the exam. You have worked extremely hard to reach this point so you can do this!

Keep your eyes peeled for the sequel, top tips to ace SQE2, coming soon.
