Harry Trick

Graduate Team Insights: an interview with Harry Trick

Welcome to Part 3 of our Graduate Team Insights series, where we sit down with members of the Graduate Recruitment Team and ask them about their background and experiences through their respective careers.

This week, we have been speaking with Harry Trick. Harry is a Partner in the Corporate team and is a Michelmores ‘lifer’, having trained with the firm. Harry is also co-lead for MAINstream, a network set up by Michelmores in 2019 with the aim of connecting angel investors with scale-up companies.

Where did you train?

Michelmores.

Do you have a law or a non-law background?

Non-law. After University I stumbled into a marketing role at a law firm to help earn some money for travelling, and at that point didn’t have the foggiest what I wanted to do as a career. The rest, as they say, is history!

What do you like most about being a lawyer?

Working with interesting people and companies and playing a small role in their success.

What do you like least about the legal profession?

Unachievable completion deadlines and unnecessarily aggressive lawyers.

If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you be?

I honestly don’t have a clue, but I would have probably tried to get into the sports industry.

What is your proudest career moment?

Making Partner was great, primarily for how proud it made my parents.

What was the biggest mistake you made as a trainee? What did you learn from it?

Sending a blank cheque out – terrifying and embarrassing, but it drilled in the ‘attention to detail’ point pretty early on…

If you could describe your leadership style in 3 words, what would they be?

Lead by example (or at least try to).

What is your favourite thing to do in your free time?

Spending time with friends and family (and dog), going to the pub, and all things Exeter City F.C. (and a bit of lawn bowls in the summer months…).

Given what you know now, what advice would you give to your trainee self?

Don’t use work as an excuse to stop doing team sports.
