Michelmores is proud to announce that the Firm has been ranked 57th in the 2025 Social Mobility Employer Index, an increase of 44 places on our 2024 ranking. Now positioned within the Top 75 employers, this recognition reflects our continued commitment to widening access to the legal profession and driving positive change.
The Social Mobility Employer Index, run by the Social Mobility Foundation, is the leading benchmark for employer-led social mobility in the UK. It assesses organisations across eight key areas – including outreach, recruitment, progression, culture, and advocacy – to evaluate the actions taken to advance social mobility in the workplace.
This is the second year Michelmores has entered the Index. The Firm’s improved ranking is the result of sustained focus and practical steps taken across the Firm to ensure everyone – regardless of background – can thrive and progress.
Our 2025 submission highlighted the impact of our growing social mobility initiatives and programmes, and our focus on data-driven recruitment, impactful school outreach and tailored trainee support. Key achievements included:
- Our early adoption of the Graduate Solicitor Apprenticeship as well as our School Leaver Apprenticeship, which is a credible alternative for those who haven’t attended university.
- Our schools’ partnership programme Momentum which enables colleagues to work with students to improve their knowledge of interview skills, effective communications and career pathways. We work with Exeter College, St Luke’s school in Exeter and St Katherine’s school in Bristol – each selected by our partner VisionPath for their diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
- Launching Momentum Mentoring to offer students more in-depth, one-to-one support.
- Our work to grow the quantity and quality of the diversity data of our people – creating dedicated campaigns to build trust, awareness and understanding of the importance of data to our social mobility and inclusion programmes.
- Investment in our Learning and Development team and programmes to create exciting training that is consistent for all of our people.
- Equipping our HR & Graduate Recruitment teams with tools to enhance inclusive recruitment, including the use of Hemisphere training which helps to highlight and dismantle bias as well as increase racial literacy.
This September, we were delighted to welcome our first alumni from Momentum – our schools’ partnership programme – as a School Leaver Apprentice. Through Momentum, colleagues from across the Firm deliver sessions in person. Of the impact of the programme, Dylan Collins, our Momentum alumni, comments:
“Momentum set me up with the skills I needed to succeed in my interviews at Michelmores. Being able to speak to trainees and current legal apprentices at the sessions gave me invaluable knowledge on how to research the Firm. Whether people choose a career in law or not, it provides the fundamental skills needed to succeed in obtaining any role. It was also an enjoyable and engaging experience, which was championed by the amazing Michelmores team.”
Speaking about the results, Michelmores’ Managing Partner, Tim Richards, added:
“We are delighted to see our progress recognised in this year’s Index. At Michelmores, we know that potential is everywhere – but opportunity is not. That’s why we are focused on taking sustained, practical action to support social mobility, from school outreach to recruitment, and through every stage of a career with us. We still have work to do, but this achievement reflects the commitment of our people to drive forward positive change.”
Michelmores’ position in the Index reinforces our broader commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. As the Firm looks ahead, it remains focused on creating a workplace where everyone feels they belong – and where barriers to success are actively dismantled.
