Guest article by Girling Jones: hiring staff in the construction industry – stay ahead of the game

In this guest article, Girling Jones, recruitment specialists for the construction, building and property jobs market – and sponsor of the 2015 Michelmores Property Awards, give their five top tips on how to secure the very best talent in the competitive property industry.

Hiring staff in the construction industry

The construction market in the South West is extremely buoyant and as some of the larger projects in the area begin to draw on local talent the demand for new staff will become increasingly acute.  With this in mind attracting and more importantly securing the right staff should be at the forefront of your thoughts. With this in mind it is important to remember when interviewing potential new employees you sell your company to them as much as they sell themselves to you. Good candidates are currently courting between 3 and 5 job opportunities at any one time so your approach to the interview and offer process is key to securing the hires you want. Remember these 5 points:

  • Work closely with your recruitment consultant to understand a candidates key motivators before the interview. This will allow you to underline the relevant benefits of your business and make your offering more potent.
  • Make sure your interviews are structured and offer a balance between questioning the candidate and selling your company and the position on offer
  • Keep the momentum going. Don’t take too long to give feedback, book in second interviews or make offers. Good candidates go quickly in this market so if you are keen then don’t delay the process or you may just lose out.
  • Try and make the right offer first time and trust your recruitment consultants advice on where to pitch this.
  • Finally make sure all candidates leave the interview with a positive experience and ideally wanting the job. Your reputation in the market is key to attracting good staff and candidates who have been interviewed whether successful or not can help to propagate that positive reputation.
