Surrogacy Law and Reform: Family Law Journal article by Louisa Ghevaert on landmark UK surrogacy report
In an article in the March 2016 edition of Family Law Journal Louisa Ghevaert, Head of Michelmores' Fertility and Parenting team, outlines the findings and recommendations contained in the report of the Surrogacy UK Working Group on surrogacy law reform Surrogacy in the UK: myth busting and reform (November 2015).
The article explains that the report of the Surrogacy UK Working Group busts a number of pervasive myths about surrogacy that have shaped surrogacy debate in recent years. The article puts surrogacy law in the UK in context. It also explains the recommendations for law reform and best practice set out in the report which seek to protect the interests of surrogate-born children and improve surrogacy in the UK for intended parents and surrogates.
The Surrogacy UK Working Group surveyed over 400 surrogates, intended parents and other interested parties in the UK surrogacy community – and is believed to be the largest survey of its kind. The article explains that the report finds a strong consensus among those who responded to the survey that surrogacy in the UK should remain altruistic. The article also explains that the report does not seek radical reform of surrogacy law in the UK and instead states that current surrogacy law provides a workable basis from which improvements can be made.
The report of the Surrogacy UK Working group on surrogacy law reform is published by Surrogacy UK and written by legal academic Dr Kirsty Horsey in collaboration with the Surrogacy UK Working Group. Louisa Ghevaert is a member of the Surrogacy UK Working Group along with Dr Kirsty Horsey, senior lecturer at Kent Law School, University of Kent; Natalie Smith, trustee of Surrogacy UK; Sarah Norcross director of the Progress Educational Trust and Sarah Jones, a trustee of Surrogacy UK.
