Head to Head with Sarah Ferguson, Senior Project Manager and Academy Hub Lead for Derby Diocesan Academy Trust
Sarah Ferguson (not the disgraced ex-Royal)
Your current title / role:
Senior Project Manager and Academy Hub Lead for Derby Diocesan Academy Trust.
Brief career background:
I studied Business Management at University in Edinburgh, then began a Graduate management trainee programme. I secured a position as an Assistant Project Manager with a large and successful education consultancy (Place Group) in 2008, where I worked for four years before leaving in 2012 to work in the family consultancy business. I still work with Place Group very closely, where we have become friends as well as colleagues.
What does a typical working day look like?
Busy – lots of travel, emails and phonecalls! Most days I have at least one meeting in a school which is the highlight of my day.
What did you have for dinner last night?
Lasagne (made a month ago and frozen in preparation for a night I didn’t have the energy to cook).
What was the last piece of music you listened to?
A random selection whilst running... I think there was some Last Shadow Puppets and the ‘Nashville’ TV series soundtrack – we’re planning a trip to Nashville next year so I’m trying to get used to Country music!
What was your favourite and most hated subject when you were at school?
I hated Maths, I just don’t understand numbers! I loved English Language / Literature but my favourite subject was History.
What is the best thing about your job?
Seeing the difference schools can make to children’s lives and being inspired by staff in schools who work relentlessly to make this difference.
If you could change one thing about the current education system what would it be?
There is a lot of important operational activity outside of the classroom in a school (finance, HR, building maintenance etc.) but children should always be at the centre of everything we do and we need to make sure school leaders can focus on this.
