The Real Deal: Interview with Bill Duncan

Bill Duncan is a Solicitor within the Commercial Litigation team. Bill joined Michelmores in January 2013. Prior to that, he was a senior litigation partner with Wolferstans in Plymouth. He has over 30 years’ experience of a wide range of commercial disputes, including debt collection, building and property disputes, professional negligence and beneficial ownership. Bill enjoys cricket and skiing and is an amateur dog walker. Jade Porter asked him a few questions.

Why did you choose Michelmores?

The short answer because Nikki is a partner (Nikki Duncan is a partner in the Employment team). Nikki as partner was aware they needed extra hands with Sara (associate within the Commercial Litigation team) going on maternity leave cover and I applied for the job.

Why did you choose to work in the South West?

We chose this in 1982. Better quality of life and the chance of interesting work with direct client contact.

Why did you choose your area of law?

Ligation was the seat I was offered on qualification; it was the most interesting of the 4 seats and I was very happy to take the offer.

What has been the highlight of your career at Michelmores?

Very difficult to say. Finding a letter that confirmed an agreement the other side said did not exist; fun run; good team to work with.

What advice would you give to trainees in the current climate?

Get wide, hands on experience if you can. Avoid London firms. Go for mid to large firms with wide practice.

If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you be?

The idle poor probably.

If you were a biscuit, what would you be and why?

A ginger snap. To spice up someone’s life.
