Michelmores appointed as legal partner to Derby Diocesan Academy Trust

Top 100 law firm Michelmores has been appointed as legal partner to the Derby Diocesan Academy Trust (DDAT) – linked to the Diocese of Derby which supports 110 church schools on behalf of Derby City and Derbyshire Local Authorities.

In addition to providing day-to-day legal advice, Michelmores will advise the DDAT on the future structure and growth of the Trust − which expects see up to six new Academies join by September 2015.

Michelmores currently works with a total of four Dioceses across the UK, having been appointed by the Bishop Antony Educational Trust − part of the Hereford Diocesan trust, in 2014, to advise on Academy conversions.  The firm has also acted as Diocesan Registrar for the Dioceses of Exeter and Truro, for more than 103 years combined.

Antony Power, head of Michelmores' Education team and lead partner to the DDAT, said:

"Derby is a very popular Academy Trust doing some excellent work in the education sector, so we are delighted to work alongside them at this time of exciting growth."

Michelmores provides specialist advice to a broad range of ecclesiastical clients and religious organisations, with specialist knowledge of Academy Trusts, Diocesan investment properties and schools, parsonages and parochial Church Council trust property. The firm also represents Church Commissioners and many other faith-based organisations.

Michelmores was appointed to represent the DDAT and the Diocese of Derby on a retained basis in October 2014, following a competitive tender process.
