Michelmores advises on Pacific Island Deal

Lawyers from Michelmores Business Group have advised Australian law firm Rockwell Olivier on aspects of English Law relating to the Interchange Vanuatu Cable Project in the South Pacific.

Rockwell Olivier was acting for Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited in relation to the provision of finance for the project, which heralds the arrival of the first international submarine optical fibre cable connection between Vanuatu and Suva, Fiji, connecting the island to the Southern Cross Cable Network, which links Australia and New Zealand with the USA.

John Ridgway, Managing Principal at Sydney firm, Rockwell Olivier, said: “With our significant banking and finance experience we were also involved in the documentation and negotiation of the financing of the deal, including the facility and collateral/security package. Our local knowledge assisted all involved in overcoming some of the challenges that the multi-jurisdictional nature of the cable posed to what we would call a “traditional” security package.

“Special thanks are due to Charles Maunder and Anna Thompson at Michelmores for their assistance and turnaround.  It was much appreciated and we’re looking forward to other opportunities to work together.”

Charles Maunder, Head of the Banking & Restructuring Team at Michelmores, said "This was an exciting project to be involved in, and we are delighted that our expertise helped to bring the project to such a successful conclusion."
