Meet the trainee: Laura Cann
Laura studied Law at the University of Exeter and completed her LPC at the University of Law, Bristol. Laura joined Michelmores in September 2015 and is currently in her first seat in the Residential Development team.
What did you do before starting your training contract?
My first exposure to law was at secondary school, where I spent a week of work experience in the Exeter Crown and County Court and participated in the National Bar Mock Trials. While studying law at university, I spent time gaining work experience in local firms of all sizes, and I was inspired to pursue a career in the legal sector. I sent out my training contract applications in the summer before starting my final year of University. I graduated with a First Class Law degree and went on to complete my LPC at the University of Law in Bristol.
What made you choose Michelmores?
In my first and second years at university, I attended open evenings at Michelmores' Exeter office. These were invaluable opportunities to meet professionals working here and gain an insight into what it's like to work for the firm. Everyone was so welcoming and the nature of the work/clients was very appealing, and as 'cliché' as it sounds I knew the firm was right for me. I grew up in Devon and have always lived here. After my exposure to the firm, I realised I didn't have to look further afield for high profile, interesting legal work. The firm has a variety of national and international clients and is continually growing, particularly with the London office which is exciting. I was also very attracted to the work-life balance on offer. It was a no-brainer to stay in the South West!
What are you most looking forward to?
We have lots of firm events in the run up to Christmas which will be really exciting and festive, so I am definitely looking forward to that. The Michelmores annual Christmas Bazaar, which the trainees organise, should be great fun and a fantastic opportunity to raise money for Macmillan. There's also Christmas meals with our teams, and social drinks with future trainees. I know we're all really looking forward to meeting them - it does not seem that long ago that it was us! Another event which should be a good laugh is helping the ELF charity with running an event in Princesshay. A few of us trainees have volunteered, and I can't wait to see what elf fancy dress costumes we all come up with!
Outside of the Office
In my spare time I enjoy socialising and catching up with friends, especially over a few drinks. I live in a town which is surrounded by lots of countryside, so it's always nice to try and get out for a walk and some fresh air at weekends too (especially now that my boyfriend has a cute little puppy Beagle which we can take out).
I also enjoy shopping (who doesn't) and trying to rival my sister's amazing baking skills. I am not the most sporty person but do get into running when I can, although my motivation does seem to dip in the cold winter months!
