Meet the Trainee – Christa Feltham
Christa completed her first year of an Austrian Magister Law degree at the Johannes Kepler Universität in Linz, before moving to the UK to complete her LLB at the University of Plymouth and LLM LPC at the University of Law, Bristol.
She is currently a first-year trainee solicitor, sitting in the Planning and Environment team in the Real Estate Department.
What did you do before starting your training contract?
I grew up in Austria, where I sailed for the Austrian National Sailing Team, gaining two Sportsperson of the Year Awards. I studied Austrian law long distance, before moving to the UK in 2011.
When I moved to the UK, I started an English law degree. During my studies in England, I completed a variety of work placements in the legal sector, both in London and around the UK. This included two in-house internships with the National Trust's legal team.
I then took a year out and worked as a Paralegal at Bond Dickinson in the Onshore Department. After this, I went travelling around the US. During my LPC, I worked at the University of Plymouth in the Careers and Employability Team to save money to travel around Europe in the summer before starting my Training Contract.
What made you choose Michelmores?
I first came across Michelmores at a Law Fair in Bristol. I was instantly drawn to the friendly and approachable nature of Michelmores' representatives. They really stood out to me as, whilst being relaxed and engaging in conversation, Michelmores had an impressive breadth of clients, practice areas and specialisms.
After attending the Open Day and meeting a variety of members of Michelmores, I was sure this was the Firm for me. I applied for a Training Contract and attended the Vacation Scheme during the summer.
Spending a week at Michelmores reassured me of my choice. The Firm could offer me access to interesting and challenging work, whilst giving me the option to maintain my active life style here in the South West. I was delighted to be offered a training contract after my interview and am thrilled that my expectations of what it would be like to be part of Michelmores have been met.
What has been your best moment so far?
Having only recently joined Michelmores, my expectation was that I would be afforded very little responsibility. My experience has been quite the contrary. I have been given the opportunity to get my teeth into a variety of different matters, working for different departments as well as every member of my team.
One of my personal highlights was assisting a Solicitor in the Property Litigation team in challenging a Tree Preservation Order. This required me to compile various documents and advice in support of our challenge along with liaising directly with the client and Counsel.
Legal work aside, I was part of the team of trainees that organised Michelmores' Christmas Bazaar, which raised over £2000 and I have joined the Charity of the Year/CSR Committee. I am also assisting Michelmores in working with Aspiring Solicitors, an organisation aiming to increase diversity in the legal sector. I have volunteered as a Professional Ambassador for over two years.
Outside of the office
Outside of work I try to cram in an active life style, which includes climbing, yoga, sailing and travelling along with exploring new recipes, restaurants, wine and languages. I spend a lot of my free time planning my next adventures. Currently on the list for the year is another skiing trip, a long weekend in Palma and a visit to Indonesia, for which I am trying to get to grips with basic Indonesian language. This is proving challenging at the moment…senang bertemu denganmu.
