Meet the Trainee – Rob Bailey

Rob studied History at Cardiff University where he also completed his GDL, before going on to complete the LPC LLM at the University of Law in Bristol. Rob is currently in his first year as a Trainee sitting in the Banking, Restructuring and Insolvency team.

What did you do before starting your training contract?

Before being offered a training contract at Michelmores, I worked as a Paralegal at a Cardiff-based law firm in the Nursing Care team. Working as a Paralegal offered a great insight into what a legal career would be like and also provided valuable early experience of communicating with clients, managing my own caseload and drafting submissions.

What made you choose Michelmores?

My first contact with Michelmores was at the Cardiff University Law Fair and I really liked what I saw; everyone at the Michelmores stand was very approachable and passionate about the firm (they also had triangular highlighters which could be used to highlight in three different colours). Having previously researched the firm it was clear that it offered the best of both worlds; big clients, high-profile work and expert colleagues all in the idyllic surrounds of sunny Devon.

Having successfully applied for the vacation scheme, I spent a week working in the Corporate & Commercial team. The vacation scheme offers a great insight into life at the firm – it really felt like the purpose of the week was as much about prospective trainees learning about Michelmores, as it was about the Firm assessing applicants. It was during this week that I became convinced that Michelmores was the firm for me and I was delighted when I was offered a training contract.

What has been your best moment so far?

The work of a Michelmores Trainee is so varied that it's very difficult to choose a single moment! What I have probably enjoyed most is the satisfying feeling of noticing progress with my own development, such as completing a piece of work well when I recall really struggling with a similar piece of work a month before. Thanks to Michelmores' strong focus on developing trainees and the supportive colleagues around me, I have the opportunity to experience this feeling frequently.

On a more personal note, selling out of my home-baked crème egg rocky roads within minutes at the Easter bake sale was a great moment for me. Historically, my baked creations have been the lone survivors of many a bake sale... on some occasions the standard of my baking has been such that disappointed colleagues have even returned cakes to me!

Outside of the office

I have recently joined the Michelmores' running club and the in-house gym in a panglossian attempt to off-set the multitude of my far more languid pursuits, which I won't go into here. I enjoy travelling and I am looking forward to an impromptu trip to Romania later this month. I also enjoy playing guitar and the occasional game of squash, whenever I can find someone who is either as un-coordinated as I am or incredibly patient!
