Head to Head with Tom Briant-Evans, Head of Commercial Education at Michelmores
Your current title / role:
Head of Commercial Education
Brief career background
I came into the Education sector in a very roundabout way. Having read Business Studies at university, I subsequently avoided a desk job for as long as possible by running away to sea courtesy of the Royal Navy, where I spent seven happy years as a Warfare Officer primarily serving in the Submarine Service. Real life eventually caught up with me and I left the Navy in 2008 to re-train as a solicitor and qualified as a Company Commercial specialist right in the middle of a recession. Not to be put off, I worked in the South West for the next few years advising local businesses both large and small.
My involvement in the Education sector was really a product of the expanding world of academies, and having cut my teeth on Academy conversions I then diversified into providing commercial advice to the newly created Academy Trusts. I joined Michelmores in 2017, and am really excited to be part of the team.
What does a typical working day look like?
It really varies depending on the nature of work on my desk. One aspect of the role that I really enjoy is getting out of the office to meet clients, and as we operate up and down the country, this keeps me on my toes!
What did you have for dinner last night?
This is one of those questions where I feel I should lie, but in order to maintain my integrity I will come clean and admit that it was a frozen chili-con-carne followed by chocolate ice cream.
What was the last piece of music you listened to?
In Between Dreams by Jack Johnson – got to love those Hawaiian tunes on a wet January morning on the M5.
What was your favourite and most hated subject when you were at school?
Maths was not my friend at school, but I really enjoyed History and English.
What is the best thing about your job?
The people. Clients, schools, teachers, contacts at the DfE and the team at Michelmores – it is, on the whole, a really positive environment to work in, which can be a rare thing in the legal sector!
