Michelmores Clin Neg Well-Represented in Junior Lawyers Division
Young Lawyers of Devon and Somerset Law Society assemble
The Devon and Somerset Law Society Junior Division has elected its committee, with Michelmores taking four seats: Sean Garbutt vice chairman; Kieran van Bussel social secretary; Holly Dobbins education secretary, and Martin Young communications. Of these, 3 are members of the Clinical Negligence team.
The JLD acts as an important intermediary between young lawyers and their senior counterparts, providing information and mentoring support to members and maintaining a proactive network within the regional legal community. Social events also form a substantial part of the JLD calendar, bringing together members on local and national platforms. So, more than just meetings: an annual football tournament and JLD ball are particular highlights.
As vice chairman, Sean's role incorporates liaison programmes between larger and smaller firms. On the importance of this aspect of the JLD's work, he says:
'Regional law is an ecosystem - firms of all sizes and specialisms have their part to play, and are reliant to an extent on proper communication.
From the client's perspective, a good relationship between firms specialising in different practice areas means that legal services are easily accessible, and in the long game this helps to promote the good name of the industry.'
The Michelmores committee members encourage all young lawyers in the region, whether embarking on training contracts or still undertaking the academic stage, to get involved with the JLD. They hope to continue the good work of the previous year's committee, where successful charity initiatives and social events proved a gratifying success.
