Michelmores sponsors food export initiative

Michelmores, along with Nat West Bank and the UK Trade and Investment government agency (UKTI) has recently sponsored the chief executive of regional food group Taste of the West (ToTW), John Sheaves, on a fact finding mission to Singapore.

The trip is part of an export initiative to the Far East by ToTW which is being supported by Caroline Spelman MP, the Secretary of State for the Environment.

The Secretary of State visited the Devon County Show in May where she announced the new export initiative to help small and medium-sized food producers to export their wares abroad.

She said: ““We will be allowing companies like Otter Valley Dairy to set up a trade stall actually within our embassies all round the world. It will help companies to come over on a trade mission and get their business known and recognised in what can be very lucrative overseas markets.

“The first embassy to offer this facility will be in Indonesia. There, the food and drink market is booming and very keen on British produce. Our producers and farmers have a reputation for quality and food safety that is very valued over there.

“We are calling the initiative a ‘bird table’ approach, offering a protective roof over the producer’s head for a few days so that they can meet wholesalers and media all over the world in a supportive atmosphere.”

In response, John Sheaves said: “This announcement from Mrs Spelman is most welcome. I know many of our members in the South West will be very keen to explore the possibilities of exporting our fantastic Westcountry food and drink to overseas markets,” he said.

Tim Richards, head of Michelmores Food & Drink Group, added: “We are delighted to have facilitated John Sheaves important mission in the Far East.  Michelmores is very active in the South West’s food & drink sector which plays a major role in the regional economy.

“With support from the Secretary of State, UKTI and businesses with vision and commitment such as Michelmores who can see the importance of this sector, food and drink producers will be very encouraged about the prospect of doing business overseas.”
