Bribery Act

Take our test to find out how much you know...

Legal or illegal?

  • Giving a case of champagne to a client at Christmas?
  • Hosting a company golf day?
  • Offering commission fees in return for business opportunities?
  • Accepting tickets to a sporting event from a potential new supplier?

The new Bribery Act will turn your understanding of what bribery is on its head. Businesses will be required to have policies in place regarding corporate hospitality and facilitation payments.

So, what is the difference between bribery and corporate hospitality?

Corporate hospitality which seeks to improve the image of a business or to develop good relations is recognised as an established and bona fide part of doing business. As long as the hospitality in question remains reasonable and proportionate, the Act will not be engaged. The guidance produced by the government provides practical examples of what may be and what may not be considered "reasonable and proportionate". View the guidance here.
