UK Regional Law Firm of the Year
Michelmores LLP was named as the UK Regional Firm of the Year at the British Legal Awards 2009, hosted by Legal Week magazine.
The firm was one of six finalists for the award and had to meet a demanding set of criteria to beat off the challenges posed by some significant practices including Boyes Turner (Reading), Brodies LLP (Glasgow & Edinburgh), Hill Dickinson (Liverpool, Manchester, Chester and London), Keoghs (Bolton) and Stevens & Bolton LLP (Guildford).
Michelmores was required to demonstrate that it is a leader within its target markets, has made significant progress over the past year and that it is working to a clear strategy. The judging panel were also looking for legal expertise and innovation, a strong focus on client care and sustainable improvements in financial performance.
Judges' comments included: "Exeter-based Michelmores impressed the judges with the quality of its client base and the clarity of its strategy."
Michelmores' submission was predicated on the firm achieving its ambitions through organic growth, innovation in recruitment and staff development, significant lateral hires and sector focus rather than acquisition. There has been year on year investment in infrastructure, IT, training and personal development and CSR programmes.
Despite the recession, during 2009, the firm achieved significant growth increasing its turnover by almost 12 per cent and was recognised by the Lawyer magazine as the UK's second fastest growing practices. The firm also announced its long term vision involving a strategy aimed at increasing annual turnover to £50m and doubling headcount to over 600 by 2015.
Malcolm Dickinson, Michelmores' managing partner, said: "The award examines all aspects of the business and we were able to demonstrate that the firm continues to progress, despite the challenging economic climate of the past twelve months.
"Winning this award has been made possible by a huge team effort with everyone in the firm playing a part. This is a fantastic achievement and we are delighted that our hard work has paid off in this recognition by the British Legal Awards."
