Shivaji joined Michelmores in January 2008 from Russell-Cooke LLP, where he was a partner. Prior to that he worked as in-house legal adviser to an overseas development charity and as a legal consultant to organisations involved in fair trade and campaigning for free speech.

Shivaji specialises in charity law, acting for sponsors of new charities as well as the trustees and staff of existing charities and other not-for-profit bodies. His work includes the formation and dissolution of voluntary sector organisations and most of the legal issues they encounter during their lifespan. This includes dealing with difficulties, including Charity Commission investigations and internal disputes. Shivaji also supports companies, local authorities and individuals intending to do business with, donate to, or otherwise support charities. Shivaji regularly lectures and writes on changes in the law relevant to charities.

Shivaji's team draws on specialist lawyers from other disciplines across the firm including employment, property, corporate, commercial, probate and legacy management, tax, and litigation. The team is able to support charities, social enterprises and other voluntary sector organisations with all aspects of their activities. The team also works closely with the firm’s Projects team to support local authorities and other public sector bodies.

Shivaji is an active member, and former Secretary, of the Charity Law Association. He is also a serial charity trustee. with current involvements including a intercultural arts charity and a legal education charity. Shivaji, a keen cyclist is also Honorary Consulting Solicitor to CTC, the UK’s national cyclists’ organisation.
