The double act of Exeter University Olympic sailing prospects, sponsored by Michelmores LLP, are well into their preparations for the 2012 Games, when the sailing events will be taking place in Weymouth.

Sophie Ainsworth and Sophie Weguelin are now in their final year at Exeter studying Exercise and Sports Science, and soon attracted support from Michelmores under the University of Exeter Sports Scholarship scheme.

The two 20 year-olds have a string of sailing honours between them, including two gold medals in the 29er World Championships 2007, and are now aiming to represent Great Britain at the London Olympics sailing in the 470 class, with Sophie W helming and Sophie A as crew.

Michelmores partner Simon Thomas said: "Over the years we have sponsored many scholars at Exeter University, including rugby players, a cricketer and an America's Cup sailor but this is the first 'two-handed' sailing team.

"These are very determined young women and we have been following their progress closely. We are all hoping that their efforts will culminate in Olympic Gold."

Sports Scholarships are available for students of outstanding sporting ability who show evidence of achievement or potential at national level. They are only offered to students who have gained an offer of a place or normal admission to a course at the University on their academic qualifications.
