Michelmores continued growth boosted by reappointment to SRA Intervention Panel

Ambitious London and Exeter law firm Michelmores appears to have withstood the harsher impact of the recession, having announced a 12 percent increase in turnover during 2008/9.

The encouraging results have been supported by the firm's eight-strong intervention team's recent reappointment to the Solicitors Regulatory Authority (SRA) Panel to act in interventions throughout London and the South West for a three year period.

Managing partner Malcolm Dickinson attributes the firm's strong performance to the quality of its people and the diverse nature of the practice which has allowed continued growth across all sectors.

He said: "We are very pleased with the results and the volume of quality instructions we have received in light of the current and enduring economic recession, while developing practice areas such as our intervention work has also been helpful.

"However, we believe it will be a challenging year ahead and we are very aware that it will be even more difficult to maintain our year on year positive growth pattern going forward."

The recession has prompted a growing need for intervention following which the Michelmores team are asked by the SRA to deal with all urgent matters and client materials of law firms they have closed down because of regulatory non-compliance.

Partner Charles Metherell, who heads the Intervention Team at Michelmores, added: "We have one of the largest dedicated intervention teams in the country supported by a diverse group of specialists in areas such as accounting and IT.

"The SRA resolves to intervene when it believes that the interests of the public are at risk.  Reasons for this serious course of action can range from dishonesty and financial mismanagement to partner incapacitation or bankruptcy.  Some of these causes can be greatly exacerbated by the deep recession and the business pressures this brings.

"Our job is primarily to look after the interests of the clients of those firms which often involves us drawing upon specialist expertise to provide the best possible solutions."
