Team: Clinical Negligence
Laurence is Head of the Clinical Negligence team. He specialises in paediatric/adult cardiac surgery, birth injuries - cerebral and Erb's palsy, gynaecology, spinal and plastic/cosmetic surgery, neurological injury.
He has practised exclusively in clinical negligence litigation since the 1980s.
He was lead solicitor to Bristol Heart Children Action Group at Bristol Royal Infirmary Public Inquiry, handling related fatal and acute brain damage claims with significant PTSD, consent, exemplary/aggravated damages, "corporate failure", increased risk issues.
Laurence and his team currently act for UK haemophiliacs who contracted HIV and hepatitis C after receiving infected blood products in their claims against US pharmaceutical companies. He has been closely involved in litigation and the debate over private sector involvement in the NHS and was asked to give evidence to the House of Commons on this issue.
Laurence's interests also include litigating an increasing number of cases for British nationals in the English courts, including one in Saudi Arabia, where cosmetic surgery and other medical treatment was performed at overseas clinics. In doing so Laurence relies, where they are present, on jurisdictional factors and circumstances connecting claims to the UK. He acts in proceedings before the English High Court for a former Premiership footballer in a substantial claim for damages for the loss of his career earnings following failed surgery performed in the US by a leading American knee surgeon.
Laurence is a Legal Adviser to Constructive Dialogue for Clinical Accountability (CDCA).
